Psychological Therapy & Health Insurance Reimbursement in The Netherlands
Nurturing Minds Psychologists provides non-contracted psychological care (ongecontracteerde GGZ) within the Dutch healthcare system, as well as private psychological therapy.
Treatment is available for adults and is provided by a BIG-registered healthcare psychologist (GZ-psycholoog) in English, Dutch, Spanish, and Catalan.
Nurturing Minds Psychologists works with both Dutch and international clients, with a particular focus on expats, international professionals and multilingual residents.
Depending on your individual insurance policy and coverage conditions, psychological treatment may be partially reimbursed through Dutch health insurance. Clients with international health insurance may also be eligible for reimbursement, depending on their provider and policy.
Non-Contracted Psychological Care and Dutch Health Insurance
Nurturing Minds Psychologists operates as a non-contracted practice (ongecontracteerde zorg) within the Dutch healthcare system. This means that the practice does not have contracts with Dutch health insurance companies.
When psychological treatment meets the requirements for insured mental healthcare, your health insurer may reimburse part of the treatment costs. The amount reimbursed varies depending on your insurer and individual health insurance policy.
When choosing this route, treatment needs to meet the requirements and conditions that apply to insured mental healthcare in the Netherlands. These requirements apply throughout the course of treatment and may influence the organisation of the treatment process and its duration.
For treatment reimbursed through Dutch basic health insurance, a valid referral from your GP or another authorised referrer is generally required.
Before starting treatment, we recommend contacting your health insurer directly to confirm:
• Whether your policy provides reimbursement for non-contracted mental healthcare (ongecontracteerde GGZ)
• What percentage or amount of the treatment costs will be reimbursed
• Whether prior approval or authorisation is required
• Whether any additional conditions apply to your policy
For further information regarding insurance procedures and reimbursement conditions, please refer to our Terms & Conditions.
International Health Insurance
Nurturing Minds Psychologists also provides psychological treatment to clients with international health insurance.
Depending on your insurance provider, policy and coverage conditions, treatment may be partially or fully reimbursed.
Requirements vary between international insurers. We therefore recommend checking your coverage directly with your insurance provider before beginning treatment, including whether a referral, prior approval or authorisation is required.
Private Psychological Therapy
Therapy can also be accessed privately, without claiming the costs through Dutch basic health insurance.
A GP referral is not required for private therapy.
Choosing private therapy provides greater flexibility in how treatment is organised. The treatment plan, frequency and scheduling of sessions can be tailored to your individual needs, therapeutic goals and availability.
Private therapy may be particularly suitable if you value this flexibility, prefer to arrange treatment independently, or are seeking psychological care that is not covered by Dutch basic health insurance.
Payment and Invoicing
Sessions are paid directly to Nurturing Minds Psychologists. Payment is required in advance at the time of booking via Tikkie or another available banking or payment platform.
Invoices containing the necessary treatment information are provided for reimbursement purposes when applicable.
Clients are responsible for checking their individual insurance coverage, obtaining any required referral or prior authorisation, and submitting reimbursement claims to their insurer.
Choosing the Right Option
Non-contracted psychological care and private therapy provide two different ways of accessing treatment at Nurturing Minds Psychologists.
If you wish to use Dutch basic health insurance or international insurance, treatment must meet the requirements for insured mental healthcare, and reimbursement depends on your individual insurance policy.
Private therapy offers greater flexibility to tailor the structure, frequency and scheduling of treatment to your individual needs and circumstances, without requiring a GP referral.
If you are unsure which option applies to your situation, you are welcome to contact Nurturing Minds Psychologists for general information. Confirmation of reimbursement and coverage should always be obtained directly from your insurance provider.
